Assignment 1- What is Illustration?


Why did you choose this as your illustration?
- I've always loved works of fantasy, just the whimsical elements that evoke imagination and a sense of fun. This illustration in particular is one of my favorites because of the colors, movement, and all of the small details throughout the piece.

What kind of illustration is this?
-A fantasy illustration for the cover of one of the illustrators art books.
What is the purpose of the illustration?
- Hestia, The Faerie Queen, is the cover of Brian Froud's art book titled World of Faerie, giving the reader a taste of what the rest of the book will contain and the entire theme of Froud's work. It's purpose is to draw the viewer/reader into wanting to see more of the work inside the book.
What was the context in which the illustration appeared?
- While the illustration was used for the cover of the book, it also appears up later in the book in the context of being able to decipher the hearts and souls of those she encounters. Of being able to see past a person's mask to who they truly are.

What is the message of the illustration?
- Brian Froud is a big believer of painting/illustrating the spirit and soul of what he sees. Combining that with the context of Hestia being able to see what is behind one's mask. Reflecting the artist's own belief in the illustration itself.

-Brian Froud.
Who is the intended audience of the illustrated message?
-The intended audience could range from children to adults that enjoy illustrations and art depicting fantasy and whimsical elements. It's for those who wish to imagine a world where there's more than what they see in their lives around them.

- Communicates the theme of the art book and how the artist conveys how they see the world in their work.
